Monday 10/2/1950: Hurler of the Year goes to Philadelphia's Stradford
Philadelphia's right-hander Gilbert Stradford was untouchable all year long. His work paid off today as the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES named him the Hurler of the Year winner! In 37 starts this year Gilbert struck out 133 batters in 326 innings of work. His ERA is 2.60, his record 25-12. Gilbert has pitched 3 shutouts and 35 complete games. He's 1st in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES in ERA and 1st in wins!
 
Monday 10/2/1950: Kansas City's Olney named Slugger of the Year winner
It was a day to remember for Kansas City's Ralph Olney, who won the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES Slugger of the Year today. It put the finishing touches on what has been a tremendous season for the slugger. Olney has walked 76 times this year and posts a .431 OBP. While batting .328, 136 for 415, he has driven in 77 runs. He's 5th in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES in batting, 1st in homeruns and 7th in RBI!
 
Monday 10/2/1950: Birmingham's Longworth named Debut of the Year winner
Robert Longworth was named the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES Debut of the Year winner today. Birmingham's pitcher put up pretty good numbers for a rookie this year. This 21 year old kid will probably have a long and successful career! Opposing players hit .237 against Robert this season. While posting an ERA of 3.41 he went 11-2 in 12 starts, fanning 31 and walking 30 hitters. Robert has pitched one shutout and 7 complete games.
 
Monday 10/2/1950: Player of the Week honors go to New York (B)'s Norris
New York (B)'s first baseman Bull Norris had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES Player of the Week. In 27 at bats he hit .407 with 3 HR and 6 RBI.
 
Sunday 10/1/1950: Red hot Devlin wins Pitcher of the Month award
It's the 1st time that the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES Pitcher of the Month award goes to New York (B)'s pitcher Cal Devlin. His record of 4-0 in 5 was among the leagues best this month. In 43 innings of work he allowed just 31 hits while striking out 16, compiling an ERA of just 2.09. Cal also fired a shutout. This season Devlin compiled an ERA of 2.64, going 15-6 in 25 starts. He fanned 48 while giving up 173 hits in 215 innings. He has 18 complete games and one shutout.
 
Sunday 10/1/1950: Hillman (NYB) wins Batter of the month award
It's the 1st time that the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES Batter of the Month award goes to New York (B)'s second baseman Howard Hillman. Howard was on fire, hitting .337 with 10 homeruns and 23 RBI. Howard is hitting .274 this year, with 113 hits in 413 at bats. He has driven in 60 runs, slugging .528.
 
Saturday 9/30/1950: Kansas City's Harlow out for the season
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's third baseman Clete Harlow suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself firing a ball to first base. He collapsed in pain after the throw and was helped off the field. After being taken to a local hospital, Harlow was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Ruptured Disc Back. Harlow has hit 7 homeruns this year while batting .323. He adds 36 doubles, along with 56 runs scored. He's 8th in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES in batting!
 
Friday 9/29/1950: Season ending injury strikes Cleveland's Woolery
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's ace Al Woolery experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 3rd inning of the game against Jacksonville, Woolery complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Torn Tricep Muscle which will require surgery. In 37 starts this year Al struck out 129 batters in 244 innings of work. His ERA is 4.91, his record 9-14.
 
Monday 9/25/1950: Palmer (KCM) wins P.O.W. award
The Player of the Week award in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES goes to Kansas City's Willie Palmer this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Willie went 10 for 19 (.526), while hitting 1 HR and collecting 13 RBI. Palmer has hit for a .308 average this season. He has 35 extra base hits along with 149 total bases, resulting in a .454 slugging percentage.
 
Tuesday 9/19/1950: New York (B)'s Moorehead out for 4-5 weeks
NEW YORK (B) - New York (B) is without its ace Darrell Moorehead for at least 4-5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Carlos Sotello in a game against New York (C). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Bone Chips Elbow was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 34 starts this year Darrell struck out 84 batters in 279.1 innings of work. His ERA is 3.45, his record 19-14. He has 27 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 2nd in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES in wins!
 
Monday 9/18/1950: Red hot Miller wins Player of the Week award
Kansas City's second baseman Maurice Miller had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES Player of the Week. Maurice went 9 for 16 (.563), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 6 RBI. His season numbers are: .253 AVG, 73 hits, 14 doubles, 3 triples and 5 longballs, along with 35 RBI and 37 runs scored.
 
Monday 9/11/1950: Red hot Hillman wins Player of the Week award
New York (B)'s second baseman Howard Hillman had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES Player of the Week. Howard went 9 for 19 (.474), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 7 RBI. He has hit 11 longballs while batting .264 this season. His 94 hits and 32 walks add up to a .328 on-base percentage.
 
Wednesday 9/6/1950: Cal Devlin shuts out Homestead on one hit
NEW YORK (B) - New York (B)'s right-hander Cal Devlin will never forget this day. The 28-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 1-hitter, against Homestead on Wednesday. Ace Mackey spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he singled with no outs in the 5th inning. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Devlin (13-6) fanned 5 and walked none, throwing 78 pitches. Toad Reynolds provided New York (B) with the offense Devlin needed as he finished 3 for 4, homering once, doubling once, and collecting 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 4-0.
 
Monday 9/4/1950: Memphis' Berkeley severely injured
MEMPHIS - Memphis' leftfielder Newman Berkeley will miss at least 5 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Anterior Cruciate Ligament. His season numbers are: .350 AVG, 117 hits, 41 doubles, 4 triples and 5 longballs, along with 31 RBI and 64 runs scored. He's 2nd in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES in batting!
 
Monday 9/4/1950: Baltimore's Ripley wins Player of the Week award
The PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES's best player of the week was Baltimore's Buster Ripley, who wins the award for the 4th time in his career. Buster went 13 for 25 (.520), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 9 RBI. Buster managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week.
 
Friday 9/1/1950: Red hot Aarons wins Pitcher of the Month award
It's the 1st time that the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES Pitcher of the Month award goes to Baltimore's pitcher Bob Aarons. He had an ERA of just 2.14 in 63 innings of work in which he struck out 17 hitters. His record in August is 6-0. Bob also fired a shutout. Opposing players hit .248 against Bob this season. While posting an ERA of 2.95 he went 16-7 in 26 starts, fanning 81 and walking 32 hitters. Bob has pitched 2 shutouts and 21 complete games. He's 5th in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES in ERA and 7th in wins!
 
Friday 9/1/1950: Cleveland's Landrem named Batter of the Month
The PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES's best player of the month was Cleveland's Blind John Landrem, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Blind John went 35 for 91 (.385), while hitting 8 HR and collecting 20 RBI. Blind John has gone 106 for 343 (.309) this season, hitting 17 taters and driving in 59 runs. He has scored 69 runs on his own.
 
Thursday 8/31/1950: Kansas City's Ralph Olney goes deep three times
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's leftfielder Ralph Olney showed the world why he is one of the most amazing sluggers in a 8-2 win over Birmingham. He almost knockes the cover off the ball, resulting in three homeruns. His 1st shot, a solo homerun off Turkey Cooper in the 1st inning, cleared the fence in left field. A 455 foot drive to left field marked his 2nd bomb, a solo homerun off Turkey Cooper in the 4th inning. A pitch from Turkey Cooper in the 6th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 363 feet from home plate in right field. Ralph collected 4 hits in 4 trips to the plate, scoring FOUR times and collecting 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 8-2.
 
Monday 8/28/1950: Indianapolis' Scott severely injured
INDIANAPOLIS - Indianapolis' pitcher John Boy Scott was part of a scary incident that saw the left-hander being hit by a line drive in the 5th inning of the game between Indianapolis and New York (C). Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Scott will miss about 4 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Fractured Jaw. Surgery will be performed next week. Opposing players hit .259 against John Boy this season. While posting an ERA of 4.07 he went 18-11 in 33 starts, fanning 127 and walking 34 hitters. He has 25 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 2nd in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES in wins!
 
Monday 8/28/1950: Philadelphia's Duquesne wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES goes to Philadelphia's D'Arcy Duquesne this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. In 20 at bats he hit .650 with 1 HR and 9 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .401, D'Arcy hit .316 and slugged .594. He has collected 41 runs batted in this year.
 
Thursday 8/24/1950: D'Arcy Duquesne uncorks cycle hits against Birmingham
PHILADELPHIA - D'Arcy Duquesne led Philadelphia to a 13-4 win over Birmingham by squeezing five hits out of his bat. That's not the best part, though. He hit for the cycle as well! A pitch from Satch Durango in the 1st inning left his bat for a RBI double. A single in the 3rd off Satch Durango accounted for his 2nd hit. His 3rd hit was a RBI double off Satch Durango in the 4th inning. Hit number 4 followed in the 6th inning, a two-run triple. Number 5 in the 8th inning, a shot estimated at 378 feet, cleared the wall in right field. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! D'Arcy scored 3 runs, and he collected 6 RBI as well! His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .311. 28 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including D'Arcy. On 8/4/1950, Bull Norris was the last player to hit for the cycle.
 
Monday 8/21/1950: Red hot Landrem wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES goes to Cleveland's Blind John Landrem this time, as the catcher displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Blind John pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .429 with 5 HR and 8 RBI while slugging 1.107. He now has homered in 4 consecutive games as well!
 
Friday 8/18/1950: Baltimore's Crooner severely injured
BALTIMORE - When it rains, it pours. Baltimore's right-hander Milton Crooner will not pitch for at least 8 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Homestead where he left the field in the 10th inning. Strained Elbow Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 17 starts this year Milton struck out 40 batters in 146 innings of work. His ERA is 3.82, his record 7-6.
 
Thursday 8/17/1950: Merrill Crutcher pitches his 1st shutout of the season
INDIANAPOLIS - It was a great day for Indianapolis' lefty Merrill Crutcher. The 24-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Memphis on Thursday. Crutcher (6-5) struck out 4 and issued 1 BB, throwing 62 of 110 pitches for strikes. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Indianapolis' third baseman Freddie Sampson got 1 hit in 2 AB. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Crutcher. The final score of the game was 2-0.
 
Monday 8/14/1950: Newark's Tyree wins Player of the Week award
It's the 2nd time that the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES Player of the Week award goes to Newark's pitcher Trent Tyree. Trent went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 2 in 17 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well.
 
Thursday 8/10/1950: Newark's Hernandez out for 7 weeks
NEWARK - Newark's centerfielder Demetrio Hernandez suffered a serious injury when he was struck by a pitch from New York (B)'s Cal Devlin. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Hernandez will probaby miss 7 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Fractured Cheekbone which will require surgery. Hernandez has hit 5 taters this year while batting .300. He adds 17 doubles, along with 40 runs scored.
 
Monday 8/7/1950: Red hot Hardy wins Player of the Week award
Philadelphia's catcher Boy Hardy had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES Player of the Week. Boy was on fire, hitting .588 with 1 HR and 5 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 9 games. While compiling an on base percentage of .292, Boy hit .246 and slugged .454. He has collected 25 runs batted in this year.
 
Friday 8/4/1950: New York (B)'s Bull Norris hits for the cycle
NEW YORK (B) - New York (B)'s first baseman Bull Norris once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Indianapolis' pitching staff with a 4 hit performance on Friday. A single in the 1st off Dick Shaughnessy accounted for his 1st hit. Number 2 in the 2nd inning accounted for a two-run double. His 3rd hit, a solo homerun off Dick Shaughnessy in the 5th inning, cleared the fence in center field. A RBI triple off Irving Beauchamp in the 7th inning, accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Bull scored 3 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! He is hitting .285 this season, with 18 HR and 54 RBI. 27 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Bull. Arnold Bowers was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 8/21/1949.
 
Tuesday 8/1/1950: Moorehead (NYB) wins Pitcher of the month award
Winner of this months PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES Pitcher of the Month award is New York (B)'s Darrell Moorehead. His ERA of just 2.25 helped him to a 6-0 record in July. He worked 52 innings, striking out 19 hitters while walking 6. Darrell pitched a shutout as well. His ERA of 3.73 helped him to a 15-7 record this year. He struck out 56 and walked 41 in 178.2 innings. He has 17 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 2nd in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES in wins!
 
Tuesday 8/1/1950: Rochelle (NEW) wins Batter of the month award
Foster Rochelle of Newark wins his 1st Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES. He had an on base percentage of .512 and hit .418, while driving in 13 runs. He has hit 4 homeruns while batting .344 this season. His 63 hits and 36 walks add up to a .462 on-base percentage. He's 4th in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES in batting!
 
Monday 7/31/1950: Red hot Gill wins Player of the Week award
Claude Gill of Jacksonville wins his 1st Player of the Week award for dominating PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES's hitters the entire week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.00 while going 2-0. He pitched two shutouts! This season Gill compiled an ERA of 4.19, going 7-6 in 16 starts. He fanned 31 while giving up 143 hits in 135.1 innings. Claude has pitched 2 shutouts and 12 complete games.
 
Saturday 7/29/1950: Darrell Moorehead pitches his 3rd shutout of the season
NEW YORK (B) - New York (B)'s right-hander Darrell Moorehead is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cleveland on just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 13th time he has done it in his career. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Moorehead (15-7) struck out 5 and walked 1, throwing 69 of 106 pitches for strikes. Octavius Jackson provided New York (B) with the offense Moorehead needed as he went 2 for 4, hitting a homerun, doubling once, and collecting 3 RBI. New York (B) scored 5 runs on 7 hits.
 
Monday 7/24/1950: Player of the Week honors go to Indianapolis' Bozeman
Lamont Bozeman from Indianapolis wins his 4th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES. He hit .458 with 8 RBI and slugged 1.167 in 24 at bats. Lamont managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week.
 
Monday 7/17/1950: Ike Crosby dominates Newark, gives up just one hit
NEWARK - With his best stuff going, Cleveland's Ike Crosby overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Newark had no chance, collecting just one hit against the right-hander. Crosby (10-3) fanned 2 and walked 2, throwing 101 pitches. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Cleveland's centerfielder Weezer Jones finished 1 for 4. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Crosby. The final score of the game was 4-0.

Kansas City's leftfielder Ralph Olney had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES Player of the Week. He hit .478 with 6 RBI and slugged 1.130 in 23 at bats.
 
Friday 7/14/1950: Donald Ross homers three times against Indianapolis
NEWARK - Donald Ross was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Newark to a 17-7 win over Indianapolis by homering three times. His 1st blast, a two-run homerun off Dick Shaughnessy in the 1st inning, landed an estimated 447 feet from home plate. His 2nd shot, a solo homerun off Dick Shaughnessy in the 3rd inning, cleared the fence in left field. His 3rd shot, off Billy Belknap in the 8th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in right field. Overall he went 4 for 4, doubling once, scoring FOUR times and collecting 6 RBI. So far this season he is batting .291 with 6 homers and 31 RBI.
 
Thursday 7/13/1950: Sid Monroe fires 2-hitter against Baltimore
HOMESTEAD - Homestead's Sid Monroe overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Baltimore had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the southpaw. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Monroe (5-5) struck out 3 and walked 2, throwing 66 of 113 pitches for strikes. Cap Hupchick provided Homestead with the offense Monroe needed as he collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, blasting a homerun, doubling once, scoring 2 runs. Homestead improved its record to 21-33, scoring 4 runs on 10 hits.
 
Monday 7/10/1950: Gilbert Stradford blanks Homestead with a 2-hitter
PHILADELPHIA - Gilbert Stradford had some fun again. Homestead hitters did not. Philadelphia's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 12 career shutouts in 129 games started. Stradford (14-4) fanned 4 and walked 1, throwing 103 pitches. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' The hitting star for Philadelphia was rightfielder John Carl Paxton, he finished with 2 hits in 3 AB, hitting a homerun, stroking a double. The final score of the game was 2-0.
 
Monday 7/10/1950: Lee Roy Quigley has 2000th career hits
MEMPHIS - Memphis' players had every reason to congratulate Lee Roy Quigley, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! His best year so far was 1933 where he hit .376 with 10 homeruns and 53 RBI. 'This day is special, I'll probably remember it my whole life. Thank god I'm blessed with the talent to play this game.' His hit in the 8th inning was a single off Satch Durango.

The PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES's best player of the week was Indianapolis' Calvin Bigby, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. He had an on base percentage of .471 and hit .438, while driving in 7 runs.
 
Saturday 7/8/1950: Carlos Diamante fires 1-hitter against Philadelphia
NEW YORK (C) - New York (C)'s lefty Carlos Diamante is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Philadelphia found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Diamante 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 2nd shutouts in his career. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Diamante (3-1) struck out 6 and walked 2, throwing 58 of 93 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for New York (C) was leftfielder Billy Zaragoza, he got 2 hits in 4 AB. New York (C) scored 3 runs on 6 hits.
 
Monday 7/3/1950: Cleveland's Williams wins Player of the Week award
The PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES Player of the Week award goes to Ollie Williams, Cleveland's starting leftfielder. He hit .458 with 9 RBI and slugged .667 in 24 at bats. Ollie is hitting .314 this year, with 54 hits in 172 at bats. He has driven in 39 runs, slugging .494.
 
Saturday 7/1/1950: Red hot Faith wins Pitcher of the Month award
Willie Faith couldn't have pitched much better than he did in June, and the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. His record of 3-2 in 5 was among the leagues best this month. In 43 innings of work he allowed just 27 hits while striking out 13, compiling an ERA of just 1.05. Willie has a record of 8-3 this season, with an ERA of 2.92. In 114 Innings he was able to strike out 41 batters. He's 7th in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES in ERA and 6th in wins!
 
Saturday 7/1/1950: Landry (JRC) wins Batter of the month award
The PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES Batter of the Month award goes to Boo Landry, Jacksonville's starting first baseman. He had an on base percentage of .469 and hit .417, while driving in 21 runs. This year Landry drove in 40 and scored 41 runs while batting .346 with 9 homeruns. He's 6th in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES in batting and 2nd in RBI!

Marvin Berry from Birmingham wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES. Berry helped his team with an average of .556 and 7 RBI in 18 at bats.

The PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES Player of the Week award goes to Boo Landry, Jacksonville's starting first baseman. Boo pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .571 with 2 HR and 10 RBI while slugging 1.000. He has hit 9 taters while batting .335 this season. His 52 hits and 10 walks add up to a .369 on-base percentage. He's 9th in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES in batting, 7th in homeruns and 1st in RBI!
 
Sunday 6/18/1950: Boo Landry clubs five hits in a game
NEW YORK (B) - On Sunday, Jacksonville's first baseman Boo Landry displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against New York (B), punishing their pitchers with five hits. His 1st hit, a two-run homerun off Cal Devlin in the 1st inning, landed an estimated 437 feet from home plate. A pitch from Cal Devlin in the 4th inning left his bat for a two-run double. Number 4 in the 6th inning accounted for a RBI double. It tied the ballgame at 7. He collected singles in the 3rd and in the 8th . Boo scored 5 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! He is hitting .335 this season, with 9 HR and 35 RBI. Jacksonville scored 13 runs on 14 hits.

Bloom (2-1) fanned 5 and walked 4, throwing 102 pitches. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' The hitting star for Kansas City was leftfielder Ralph Olney, he finished 2 for 5, blasting a homerun, and collecting 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 5-0.
 
Wednesday 6/7/1950: Philadelphia's Hinton severely injured
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's third baseman Arvil Hinton will miss at least 5 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. After being taken to a local hospital, Hinton was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Inflamed Anterior Cruciate Ligament. His season numbers are: .330 AVG, 33 hits, 10 doubles, no triples and 10 bombs, along with 19 RBI and 26 runs scored. He's 10th in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES in batting!
 
Monday 6/5/1950: Elders (IND) wins P.O.W. award
The Player of the Week award in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES goes to Indianapolis' Ben Elders this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .529 and hit .500, while driving in 5 runs. This year Elders drove in 21 and scored 15 runs while batting .291 with 6 taters.
 
Thursday 6/1/1950: Red hot Barbagallo wins Pitcher of the Month award
Jose Barbagallo couldn't have pitched much better than he did in May, and the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He went 6-0 in May and finished the month with an ERA of 1.16. He struck out 19 in 62 innings. Jose fired two shutouts! Jose has a record of 9-1 this season, with an ERA of 1.84. In 98 Innings he was able to strike out 28 batters. He has 10 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 4th in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES in ERA and 1st in wins!
 
Thursday 6/1/1950: Hupchick (HOM) wins Batter of the month award
Homestead's catcher Cap Hupchick had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES Batter of the Month. In 58 at bats he hit .414 with 4 HR and 14 RBI. This year Hupchick drove in 17 and scored 16 runs while batting .337 with 4 bombs.
 
Monday 5/29/1950: Indianapolis' Yates out for 6 weeks
INDIANAPOLIS - Indianapolis' southpaw Otis Yates suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 6 weeks. In the 9th of the game against Birmingham he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Ruptured Elbow Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Opposing players hit .247 against Otis this season. While posting an ERA of 3.60 he went 4-3 in 9 starts, fanning 25 and walking 21 hitters.
 
Monday 5/29/1950: Mackey (HOM) wins P.O.W. award
Homestead's third baseman Ace Mackey had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES Player of the Week. Ace pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .647 with 2 HR and 9 RBI while slugging 1.000. He has hit 5 homeruns while batting .330 this season. His 36 hits and 9 walks add up to a .378 on-base percentage.
 
Monday 5/22/1950: Arvil Hinton parks three against Jacksonville
PHILADELPHIA - Arvil Hinton was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Philadelphia to a 6-0 win over Jacksonville by homering three times. A pitch from Ed Williams in the 1st inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 388 feet from home plate in right field. Number 2 in the 6th inning, a shot estimated at 367 feet, cleared the wall in right field. In the 8th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Ed Williams. Arvil got 3 hits in 4 AB, scoring three runs and driving in 3 runs. So far this season he is batting .356 with 9 homers and 17 RBI. On 9/19/1949, Sweet Lew Hendrick was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game.
 
Monday 5/22/1950: Red hot Grainger wins Player of the Week award
The PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES Player of the Week award goes to Kenneth Grainger, one of Kenneth went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.10, while fanning 5 in 16.1 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. In 4 starts this year Kenneth struck out 6 batters in 32 innings of work. His ERA is 3.38, his record 2-0. Kenneth has pitched one shutout and one complete game.
 
Monday 5/15/1950: New York (B)'s Moorehead wins Player of the Week award
Darrell Moorehead of New York (B) wins his 4th Player of the Week award for dominating PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES's hitters the entire week. Darrell went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.50, while fanning 3 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well.
 
Saturday 5/13/1950: Milton Crooner (BEG) will miss 5-6 weeks
BALTIMORE - Baltimore is without its right-hander Milton Crooner for at least 5-6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Dewey Hedlund in a game against Cleveland. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Ruptured Bicep Tendon. His ERA of 4.62 helped him to a 1-3 record this year. He struck out 13 and walked 9 in 50.2 innings. He's 5th in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES in saves!
 
Thursday 5/11/1950: New York (C)'s Gusano out for 5 weeks
NEW YORK (C) - When it rains, it pours. New York (C)'s left-hander Juan Gusano will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Philadelphia where he left the field in the 7th inning. Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His ERA of 4.37 helped him to a 2-3 record this year. He struck out 24 and walked 10 in 45.1 innings.
 
Tuesday 5/9/1950: Claude Gill (JRC) will miss 4-5 weeks
JACKSONVILLE - Jacksonville is without its right-hander Claude Gill for at least 4-5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Buster Nails in a game against Kansas City. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Ruptured Elbow Ligament which will require surgery. Claude has a record of 2-2 this season, with an ERA of 5.18. In 48.2 Innings he was able to strike out 9 batters.
 
Monday 5/8/1950: Red hot Keller wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES goes to Newark's Norm Keller this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Norm went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 5 in 18 innings of work. He pitched two shutouts! In 6 starts this year Norm struck out 17 batters in 50 innings of work. His ERA is 1.98, his record 4-2. Norm has pitched 2 shutouts and 3 complete games. He's 6th in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES in ERA and 2nd in wins!

Thursday 5/4/1950: Trent Tyree pitches his 1st shutout of the season
NEWARK - Newark's Trent Tyree overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Baltimore had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the right-hander. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Tyree (2-0) fanned 1 and walked 1, throwing 115 pitches. Newark's leftfielder Remy Laphonse finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, doubling twice. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Tyree. The final score of the game was 2-0.
 
Monday 5/1/1950: Pitcher of the Month honors go to New York (C)'s Seales
Oliver Seales couldn't have pitched much better than he did in April, and the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He went 3-0 in April and finished the month with an ERA of 1.00. He struck out 10 in 27 innings. Oliver also fired a shutout.
 
Monday 5/1/1950: Player of the Week honors go to Memphis' Quigley
The Player of the Week award in the PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES goes to Memphis' Lee Roy Quigley this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .438 with 5 RBI and slugged 1.250 in 16 at bats.
 
Monday 4/24/1950: Bigby (IND) wins P.O.W. award
The PBRL NEGRO LEAGUES's best player of the week was Indianapolis' Calvin Bigby, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Calvin pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .400 with 1 HR and 6 RBI while slugging .900.
 
Thursday 4/20/1950: Season ending injury strikes Homestead's White
HOMESTEAD - Homestead's first baseman Edgar White will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Homestead and Philadelphia. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly White collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Homestead wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that White had suffered a Ruptured Achilles Tendon.
 
Thursday 4/20/1950: Grady Wilson (JRC) will miss 7 weeks
JACKSONVILLE - Jacksonville's pitcher Grady Wilson was part of a scary incident that saw the right-hander being hit by a line drive in the 3rd inning of the game between Jacksonville and Newark. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Wilson will miss about 7 weeks. Jacksonville wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Wilson had suffered a Fractured Hand.
